The tour

“Freedom & whisky gang thegither”. I have created a special tour for fans of whisky and Outlander. We will take in 5 notorious and infamous locations used for the filming of the TV series.

The tour is a full day experience, departing from Edinburgh or any location of your choice in central Scotland. After being picked up, we will soon be out of Edinburgh and into our journey. Our first stop will be at Hopeton House. This is a spectacular stately home, that was used in outside scenes for the Duke of Sandringham’s estate.  On our way we will have a close-up view of the forth bridges and opportunity for photographs. We will then take a very short drive to see Lallybroch the family home of Jamie Fraser. Midhope Castle which is located in the Hopeton Estate. Unfortunately, this is not open to the public but there is opportunity for a quick stop and some photographs of the familiar outer building and famous arched entrance.

We then head on to Fort William as portrayed in the series. In actuality only a short 15-minute drive to Blackness Castle will get us there. We can spend some time on a visit inside the castle here and you can experience life in the 18th century highlands.

It’s starting to feel like it’s time for some whisky. With a stop for lunch on the way, we then head for Deanston distillery in the beautiful town of Doune. Here you will get a chance to take part in a tasting of Deanston 12 year old, Deanston Virgin Oak and Deanston 18 year old whiskies.

It’s then off to our last stop of the day. We take a short 5 minute drive to Castle Leoch, otherwise known as Doune Castle. Here we spend some time to allow you to explore the castle and learn it’s history. This castle was also used for the filming of the classic Monty Python & the Holy Grail, and more recently, Game of Thrones.

Our tour completed, we begin our journey back to Edinburgh, taking in some of Scotland’s spectacular scenery on the way before going our separate ways.

Our journey will take us past some of Scotland’s most amazing locations. Starting in Edinburgh in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle, standing watch over Scotland’s capital, there has been evidence of a fort on the rock since the iron age around 1200 BC, this is the most besieged location in Britain. We leave the city and before long we are in the shadows of the Forth Bridges. 3 very different bridges from very different eras. Not on our tour, but in clear view from the road is Linlithgow Palace. This was used as Wentworth Prison in the Outlander series.

We will pass the amazing steel structure of The Kelpies constructed in 2014, they stand proudly in Helix park and are clearly visible from the road.

Next, we are in battle country and we will pass Stirling castle and the Bannockburn battle site, these are locations of much bloodshed in Scotland’s history.

Your tour includes pick up and drop off at your location of choice, exclusive use of a chauffeur driven luxury vehicle with expert whisky host. Chilled water will be provided in the vehicle throughout your tour. In order to give you complete control of costs, entry to distillery tours and attractions, meals and drinks are purchased at your discretion. We are more than happy to offer support with bookings and guidance on local amenities.
